 I trained in architectural and urban history at Kyoto University and completed my Ph.D. in East Asian Studies at Princeton (2005). I am the history area editor for the journal Japanese Studies. I teach widely on all periods of Japanese history and historiography, methods in Asian Studies, classical Chinese (kanbun), and more broadly on the histories and cultures of East Asia. I am a native of Michigan and dual citizen of the United States and Australia.
