I am an historian of early Japan at the University of Sydney and editor of PMJS: Premodern Japanese Studies (pmjs.org). My research focuses primarily on the history of cities and architecture before 1800 and I am currently completing a book manuscript on the urban history of Kyoto to 1600. Other research interests include comparative urban history, religion, material culture, and art. I trained in architectural and urban history at Kyoto University and completed my Ph.D. in East Asian Studies at Princeton (2005). I am the history area editor for the journal Japanese Studies. I teach widely on all periods of Japanese history and historiography, methods in Asian Studies, classical Chinese (kanbun), and more broadly on the histories and cultures of East Asia. I am a native of Michigan and dual citizen of the United States and Australia.
